Credit score
A number that sums up how you have handled credit in the past. Lenders use it to help decide whether to lend and at what rate.
Your credit score is a number based on your credit history. It reflects things like whether you pay bills on time, how much credit you use, and any defaults or missed payments. In New Zealand it is held by credit agencies Centrix, Equifax and illion.
A higher score suggests lower risk, which can mean easier approval and a better rate. A lower score does not mean an automatic no, but it can make some lenders cautious.
You can check your own score for free with any of the three agencies, and it is worth doing before you apply. Fixing errors or paying down a debt can lift it over time.
A low score is not the end of the road. Our lender panel includes ones that specialise in bad credit car finance. Get your fair rate with one soft check that does not affect your score.
